Our story

Bert Greeff (Snr) comes to Knysna

Bert Greeff was already a butcher when he came south. He had a successful shop in Magaliesburg, and he left it.

He packed up his family and drove down to a small town on the southern Cape. His wife came with him, and so did their one-year-old son, Bertie. In Knysna, Bert opened a butchery on Main Street and cut meat the way he knew how: by hand, to order, across one counter.

The baby in the car would one day buy the business from him.

Bertie buys Greeff's Butchery

In 1988, Bertie Greeff came home to Knysna.

He had grown up in the shop, but he didn't step straight into it. First came his army service, then a BCom at UPE, then a spell in accounting at Thesen's. Those years gave him something his father's trade alone couldn't: a head for business to go with the family's feel for good meat.

At twenty-four, Bertie bought the shop from his father. It was a big step for a young man, but it was also a homecoming. The butchery Bert Snr. had built after leaving Magaliesburg was now in the next generation's hands.

Ursula joined him behind the counter, and she never left. Together they carried Greeff's forward, one customer and one cut at a time.

From Main Street to Waterfront Drive

After forty-five years, the shop outgrew Main Street.

Bertie and Ursula moved it to 45 Waterfront Drive. It wasn't a job for contractors. The whole family pitched in, and so did friends, the way things get done in a small town: carrying, cleaning, fitting the new shop out by hand until the counter was ready.

It's the counter Knysna knows today, and most of the people who helped still buy their meat across it.

A second shop in Sedgefield

For years, Sedgefield people drove to Knysna for their meat, and for years they asked the same question across the counter: when are you coming to us?

In 2018, Greeff's finally did. A second shop opened in Sedgefield, twenty minutes down the road.

Pieter is on the block, cutting by hand and to order. Jackie is at the till and on the shop floor, and knows most customers by name. Different town, same way of doing things, and a lot fewer people making the drive.

And now, to your door

For sixty years you had to come to Knysna.

Now we deliver across the Western Cape, cut to order and packed cold, so what arrives at your door is what you would have carried out of the shop.

The chain is short on purpose. Our farm, our butchers, your kitchen.

Come and see us in Knysna if you are ever passing. There is coffee, and someone who knows exactly what you should do with a shoulder of Karoo lamb.

Honestly the best quality meat in South Africa with friendlly helpful staff. The place smelled clean and looked awesomwe. Lots of extras there too. You can walk there with and idea and leave with a whole braai or other feast!
